Let There be (Lower Cost) Light: US Fluorescent Lamp Bans and Your Church

Most of our churches use fluorescent lighting and CFLs in abundance, but there are other low cost and low energy options. Help your church save money and bring more light!

About the Webinar

Starting in 2023 a number of US states and other countries have banned the sale of all mercury-containing lamps, primarily fluorescent bulbs and tubes.  Most of our churches use fluorescent lighting and CFLs in abundance.  In this webinar we will discuss the different forms of mercury-based lighting, identifying the fixtures that use them, and give you some practical steps you can take to replace these lamps with LED equivalents.  We will discuss all of your options, from new fixtures to cost-effective upgrades you can do yourselves without spending a fortune.

About the Presenter

Steve Jones is a lifelong Congregationalist with a passion for lighting – both energy savings and light quality.
A certified Ergonomist, Steve started his education in Electrical Engineering before switching to Industrial Engineering.  Both fields deal with lighting.  From the first time Steve saw his home church relamped in 1989, he has been relamping every church he has attended, and now a few more, for a total of 19 done so far.  He is a hands-on, practical engineer who donates his time and the materials and often does this work himself or with help from the church members.  As a result, some very good improvements in electric costs and light levels have been realized in those churches.
Steve also spent time working for SmartWatt (now Centrica PLC) out of Albany NY, doing lighting audits and specifying energy efficient replacements for the State of New York, thru the local utility National Grid.
