Thanks for the Memories: Launching into Alzheimer’s World, written by Brian and Jean Ward, takes us through an inspiring journey, as Brian becomes the caregiver of his beloved wife, Jean. Many of us have been touched by the devastating diagnosis of Alzheimer’s in our own families and know the hardships of seeing our loved one descend into another world. The author provides a faith-based story of encouragement and how he managed to discover his God-given calling. Brian experiences the turbulence of a storm that is quieted by the biblical image of Jesus calming our fears and giving direction. Among the wind and waves, Brian answers the call and says, “Here I am, Lord.”
The journey covers each stage of his wife’s decline and illustrates how Brian adapts his skills accordingly. Practical techniques for her care include basic comfort, communication, meals, sleep, recreation and safety. The journey, however, emphasizes the spiritual nourishment and renewal
of both. He accepts the role shaped and molded by God as referenced by the biblical image of the clay pot (Romans 9:20-21). He resists the temptation to create his own agenda, realizing it is not about his needs and wants. He learns the practice of “being there” for Jean. In my chaplaincy training, “being present” was the key to pastoral care. I learned not to “fix” those with spiritual pain but accept them where they are. That may mean simply sitting and praying in silence, understanding the current mood, and exhibiting patience.
The book takes on the genre of a memoir as Brian unfolds his genuine feelings and emotions as a devoted husband. No doubt he is reminded of his wedding vows “in sickness and in health.” He experiences the toll that is heavy with walls of despair. Weariness, fear, and depression are real. By acknowledging our trust in Christ, the light can shine through and lead us on a new path. Chapter Nine: Self-Care is especially helpful for caregivers. Suggestions include reading Scripture daily, positive self-talk, sharing challenges with team members, and seeking professional help.
Finally, I highly recommend this book for caregivers, families who have a loved-one with Alzheimer’s, and readers wishing to discover an inspiring story of God’s call to care. By sharing Brian Ward’s story of compassionate care, a legacy is built. Others will fulfill their role with wisdom and understanding. I was deeply touched by this book because my own mother suffered from Alzheimer’s. I can now say, “Thanks for the Memories.”
The Apostle Paul sums up the commitment in 2 Timothy 4:6-7.
- I have done my best.
- I have fought the good fight.
- I have finished the race.
- I have kept the faith.
